Magazine Advertisement

The ad i brought in was from ESPN magazine. It was advertising coors light beer. The message was simple and straightforward; Drink coors light and you will be happy and surronded by beautiful girls! These advertising techniques obviously work otherwise they wouldnt be used. Some people say that they are demeaning to women but its not like these models are being forced to do the work. They choose to do it and are probably paid very well. Advertising is intended to catch the viewers attention and if it a method to accomplish this works it is going to be used.

Images

images compared to words can make a world of difference when trying to convey a message. A picture it worth a thousand words...or so they say! So then does this mean a picture is a better way to convey the message then by written or spoken word? The picture of president bush wearing the flight suit on bored the US Carrier was an excellent example. Like we went over in class, it was a way to show america that he was a 'hands on' president. Doing so with spoken word would be nearly impossible. Different types of media will have a huge impact on how a message is understood by its audience.

Music Appreciation Reflection

Artist: Craig Morgan
Song: The Ballad of Mr. Jenkins

This song was written recently and tells the story of a young soldier who grows old. The soldier faught in vietnam and lost his best friend there. I felt the song was written in a way to show the pain and anguish of those that have to go fight in wars; i cant really put my finger on how it is releated but it seemed to be strongly influenced by the Iraq war even though no mention of that is made in the song.

Fahrenheit 451

Why are books bad? This movie is showing a fictional time in america when intelectualims is looked down upon. Books are not allowed because they spread knowledge and give insight to their readers. At 451 degrees paper will burn- by titling the story in this way the authors message is clear.

Wangari Maathai

Wangari Maathai was born in 1940 in kenya. She is a very smart and educated person holding several degrees including a PhD. She was the department chair of a major african university with a specialization in veterinary medicine. In 2004 she became the first african woman to win a nobel prize for her work at imporving the environment.

What i found to be most interesting about her was her modesty. She began the greenbelt movement but had no intention of it becoming so large. Initially she just wanted to plant trees locally but as it caught on over 30 million trees had been planted. As of today over 1 Billion trees have been planted and cared for in a spectaculr global effort.

All the Presidents Men

This movie shows how just one or two people doing good investigative journalism can change the course of history. When Woodward and his partner were told to change stories or that they didn’t have the sources to continue they kept on pushing. They got their sources through multiple methods including personal interviews, phones interviews and good old fashion document research. What this showed is that if you never give up on your goal you will prevail. Had they listened to the skeptics perhaps the Washington post would never have published their story and nobody would know what Watergate was.

Magazine Ad

Magazine advertising has been and is becoming increasingly more inappropriate. Most ad’s are using sex as a way of selling a product. Often times the sex symbols used have nothing at all to do with the products being sold. The way these ad’s are used is extremely demeaning to woman and puts up a double standard for men. Besides creating unrealistic expectations these ads are resulting in physical problems for woman of all ages- these include bulimia and anorexia. People are people and should be seen as such, not as objects with impossible expectations
